A real company in Ghana is recorded with the Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC), and you can verify it for free — by name or by registration number. Who keeps Ghana's company register?

Ghana's official company registrar is the Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC), established under the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992). It was carved out of the former Registrar-General's Department to focus solely on company and business registration. Every limited company, business name, and external company operating legally in Ghana is recorded there — its name, entity type, and registration are matters of public record.

How to search the Ghana company register

1. Get the company's exact registered name or its registration number (the certificate or invoice usually shows one).

• BN — a registered Business Name (sole proprietor or partnership)
• ET / external — an External Company (a branch of a foreign company)

How to spot a company that isn't registered

Most problems aren't elaborate forgeries — they're businesses that simply never registered, or that use a name close to a real one. Watch for:

• A registration number that doesn't resolve to the name on the document.
• A name that is suspiciously similar to a well-known company (e.g. an extra word or initial).
